Totnes Museum, Totnes
Driving up the hill towards the arched passageway, that once divided the higher and lower parts of Totnes, a man stood waiting at the end of a dark alleyway. Unsure, we approached, and he led us down the allyway to the entrance to the museum, a former Merchants house.
We were in a new location, once in the light for around an hour and now, here we are, six hours in the dark. Climbing the spirial staircase, believed to be the mast of an old ship, each stair, unlevel, giving the sensation of being at sea. Equipment left, we entered each room, feeling the atmosphere, different from the last, the occasionaly mannequin fully dressed in period clothing making us jump. With our return to the base room, we were ready to begin our investigation.
Thinking it was a good idea to split up, turned out to be the wrong decision. Right from the off set, the feeling of the building, changed, the rooms seemed darker, but we continued on. After a short while in small groups, it as time to delve into the past all together…apart from one….alone on the ground floor, the nearest person, two floors above. Shouting came from the ground floor! Unknown breathing into someone ear would do that to a person. The breathing continued, not a breath of a young man but of a old man. Reluctant to leave the area, it had to be done, to regather thoughts and try to understand what had just happened.
The second floor, a large room with a four poster bed and original furniture, became our main focus for most of the night. Everyone that entered, at all different times, felt this was the centre of the activity. After setting up various trigger objects, rem pods, and cat balls, we all took our position in the room, remained still and called out to any spirits that are still residing at the builiding. After a very slow and queit start, the focus turned to any children that were in spirit, hoping they were intrigued with the various items on the floor. They were!
A rem pod near the door to the room alarmed, then a rem pod near the window alarmed, a cat ball on the bed flashed, and then a cat ball on the floor flashed. This patten happened over and over, as if the children were running around in cirlces. The use of equipment when left on the floor, takes the users feeling and emotion out of the investigating. What happened next, not only shocked everyone in the room, but the person it happened to.
Still remaining in the room with the bed, we wanted to try and get the spirit of a child or children to come and physically touch someone. With a cat ball in the right hand, the chosen person sat on the floor, as to get to the same hight, and held out their hand asking for them to touch the ball. Just as in life, a child would be wary of someone they don’t know, so you would expect it after death. This must have been the case as nothing happened or was felt after various questions were asked until…
Just as we were thanking, whoever had communicated with us, the offer to leave the cat ball for the children to play with must have pleased them. One more question was asked. ‘Come take the ball and you can play with it for the rest of the night’. With that being said, the cat ball, still in the person’s hand, flashed. No movement was made by the person, no human interaction with the cat ball, nothing. Did we just encounter intellegent communication.
The night continued as it started, unexplained tapping, the sense of a female in the servant’s kitchen, the feeling of touch by unseen hands. After further research of the property, the intended use of the building as a home, was never lived in the by the family.
So the question is, who is still living their days in the property? Maybe a return visit is needed.
